Whether you’ve just moved to a new area or are simply looking for a change, finding a dentist is an absolute must. After all, you need to know that you have a professional you can trust both for your checkups and in case the worst happens.

The trouble is that, with such high stakes, it won’t do to simply stroll into the first dentist you come across. Instead, you need to find someone that you can feel comfortable with for a long time to come. Luckily, there are now more ways than ever to do just that, including –

  1. Online searches
  2. Referrals from friends or doctors
  3. Local indexes
  4. And more

Even once you’ve narrowed down the list, you need to ask certain questions to make sure you’ve got this right before you sign up. But, what exactly are the right questions to ask a dentist?

1) Do they offer everything you need?

The last thing you want is having to seek services elsewhere after building a decent friendship with your dentist. So, you first need to understand what exactly a dentist has to offer. In the moment, this means finding someone who specializes in your needs, but you should also make sure of inclusive services in everything from cosmetic dentistry through to periodontal reviews and beyond.

2) Do they publish client reviews?

Recommendations are the best way to tell if a dentist is worth your time, proving their value and, in the case of pictures, showing you exactly where you stand to benefit. Personal reviews are best but, failing that, a dentist who happily shares client testimonials on their site or in-person obviously has nothing to hide.

3) What about cost?

Cost also comes into play here. Notably, how much can you expect to pay for treatment, and what payment options are available? In reality, affordability isn’t such a factor, but you want a reasonably priced dentist who offers a range of payment options including insurance (always worth checking,) card, and even staggered payments if required.

4) What does long-term care look like?

Finding a decent dentist is about more than an initial treatment. You also need to know what long-term care looks like. Preferably, you should seek a dentist who offers practical care tips alongside treatment plans, and who prioritizes regular reviews that you can rely on.

5) How long will you wait?

When your teeth need looking at, they need looking at right away, meaning that popular dentists who are booked months in advance may not be viable. Instead, look for a dentist who can see you as and when you need, or at least within a respectable time frame.
