QUESTIONS
Whether you experience sharp, dull, or throbbing pain, tooth pain is one of the most common dental emergencies. If the pain is causing you difficulty with sleeping, eating, and drinking – making it hard to focus on daily activities – you should treat this as an emergency and be seen straight away.
For more mild tooth pain, saltwater rinses can relieve sore or inflamed gums; avoid beverages or foods that can worsen symptoms (too hot, too cold, spicy, etc.); try a heat pack on the face for jaw pain; use a cold compress for abscessed teeth (hot tooth) to ease pain and swelling.
There are a number of possible reasons, which is best diagnosed by seeing your doctor and performing any necessary x-rays or examinations. Tooth pain may be caused by: 1. Decay - when bacteria deteriorates the enamel of the tooth or filling, causing it to become loose or fractured. If ignored, the bacteria can spread to the nerve and potentially result in an abscess or root canal. 2. Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) - grinding or clenching of the teeth while awake or asleep can cause pain, discomfort, facial muscle spasms, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues. It can lead to: migraines, deterioration of teeth, clicking jaw joints, loose/broken teeth, sinus pressure/pain. 3. Wisdom Teeth - when a wisdom tooth is trying to erupt or impacted, it can be painful when breaking the gums or in shifting the surrounding teeth. It should be determined by your doctor when and if extraction is necessary. 4. Orthodontic Injuries - throughout an orthodontic recourse, mild pain and soreness is common for which pain relievers and saltwater rinses may help.
React quickly. If the tooth is in one piece, rinse it off and place it back in the socket immediately. Do not touch the root of the tooth or any of the tissues remaining. Hold the tooth by the crown when inserting. If you are unable to place the tooth back into the socket, submerge and store it in milk. Contact your dentist immediately.
It’s normal in this instance to feel discomfort or temperature sensitivity. Your local pharmacy will carry ‘temporary fixes’ in the form of dental cement or adhesive to tide you over until you can visit the dentist for proper treatment. Avoid eating hard or sticky foods or chewing in the area if opting for an over the counter fix.
