ASKED
QUESTIONS
The primary difference between the two is the level of impact incurred. Sports trauma, due to the nature of the activity and force of impact, typically results in more extensive trauma requiring the coordination of multiple specialties to treat the smile and surrounding area properly.
The Sports Trauma Clinic at Boston Dental is co-run by Dr. Maged El-Malecki, DMD and Dr. Joey Chang, DMD.
Dr. Malecki is a highly experienced Aesthetic Dentist whose primary focus is to restore smiles to their natural state. He underwent private training with a top Orthopedic Physician in France, who specialized in Sports Trauma, lending to his experience in the field. Dr. Malecki formerly served as the official dentist to the MLB’s Boston Red Sox from 2016-2018.
Dr. Chang is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who has served as a Facial Trauma Surgeon at Tufts Medical Center for over a decade. Prior, Dr. Chang was the Program Director for the Tufts University Depart of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery where he taught both students and residents how to treat facial injuries of all sorts. As an educator, provider, and master of his craft, Dr. Chang conducts all surgical procedures with care, precision, and intent.
*Along with Dr. Kelli Smith, Drs. Malecki and Chang formed the unit who cared for Celtics’ Derrick White after his injury sustained during Game 5 of the 2024 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.
Boston Dental offers Sports Trauma dentistry to athletes of all levels – from youth sports, to college athletes at UMass, Boston University, and beyond, to professional athletes in the nation’s top leagues, like the NFL, NBA, NHS, and MLS.
